The following is a list of mammals from Panama, recorded from 2020 onwards, using an open-source alternative to web maps. This open-source tool offers functionalities similar to those of the ArcGIS Map Viewer but may be slower on cellphones and some computers, as all the data is loaded directly into the browser. While the ArcGIS Map Viewer might be better suited for large datasets and raster files, I found the open-source alternative to be both suitable and preferable because it does not require linking to an ArcGIS account and offers greater customizability.
Hover your mouse over the data points to see the species common name and scientific name. Initial Note: The precision of the data points has been reduced, and the locations of endangered species have been obscured for conservation reasons. A more detailed list is available at iNaturalist.Data suggest there are over 12,500 instances of mammal observations in our reference from 2020 to 2024. Below, we will see the most frequently encountered mammal species with over 100 observations:
Three-Toed Sloths, Agoutis, and Mantled Howler Monkeys are the top three most reported species since 2020. Interesting!
Looking deeper into the data, we can see the species observed between 2020 and 2024 with the most observations in each province (excluding provinces with fewer than five instances of any single species observed). The Three-Toed Sloth, with four instances, the Variegated Squirrel, with three instances, and the Agouti, with two instances, top the list of the most reported species when categorized by province.
What does this tell you, considering that the data was collected using crowdsourcing techniques?
